WHAT ARE LED POT LIGHTS?

LED stands for light emitting diode. That doesn’t mean much to you, but it will in a second. LED lighting products work completely differently than conventional light bulbs. By passing an electrical current through a microchip, the energy source illuminates tiny light sources we call LEDs (or light emitting diodes) resulting in visible light. These kinds of lights are directional light sources, meaning they emit light in a specific direction unlike incandescent or CFL bulbs, which emit light every which way. This allows an LED to emit light much more efficiently than a conventional bulb, but is also far more difficult to produce. Usually, you’ll see coloured LEDs in signal lights, computer parts and inside older televisions. In order to produce the white light of a lightbulb, different coloured LED lights are combined and covered with a phosphor material which converts the light into a neutral, white light. See? WHY LED POT LIGHTS ARE BETTER THAN INCANDESCENT?

To start off, Incandescent bulbs use a filament, the little curly wire we see in some bulbs. When the light is turned on, electric current is sent through that filament, which heats up and glows due to the traffic of electrons traveling through it. The issue with this is that it wears out the filament over a period of time and when the filament is completely worn out, the light is considered “burnt out”. Incandescent light generally doesn’t last too long, rated only for about 1000-2000 hours. Halogens are significantly better overall, with a lifespan of anywhere from 6000-15000 hours of lighting, but again, they eventually burn out. LED’s are a completely different lighting source altogether.

LEDs use a process known as electroluminescence, which is when a positive and negative current is shot through atoms to create light. This process uses little energy because very little heat is produced, however, in bunches LED’s are extremely powerful. The life expectancy of an LED bulb can be up to 100000 hours. To put that into perspective, if you turned on an LED pot light for 3 hours every day, that light will work for you for up to 91 years!

LED pot lights are also good for places that have insulation because they generate little to no heat, which makes them IC rated and it means they add to the already immense versatility of pot lights. They are also multi-directional like regular pot lights and still have the ability to fully light a room. The effect is even more so with LED lights because they are more powerful than conventional bulbs.
