LED POT LIGHTS
To ensure that you get the best results possible, It is a must that you avoid guesswork while shopping for pot lights. There are certain decisions that you will need to make on pot light fixtures in Toronto, some of which will require specific product recommendations that we, at Mr. Potlight, will gladly fulfill. For starters, you should try to understand or at least have basic information relating to types of pot-light housing.
Generally, you will have two major options when it comes to housing. You can go for New Construction if you are constructing a new office/home, or Remodeling, or if you are installing recessed lights in an existing building. In any case, pot lights make an outstanding way to provide sufficient light in the kitchen, hallway, bathroom, living room or dining room. At Mr. Potlight, we have a complete range of pot light fixtures including bulbs and trims in almost all major brands.
Now, you have to consider the following options:
- IC and Non- IC: you will need to go with an IC rated housing if you have an insulated ceiling. Either of the two options will work for non-insulated ceilings.
- Air Tight: these are modern designs meant to increase energy efficiency. They are improvements on traditional housings that would result in loss of heat or cool air into ceilings, eventually increasing the heating and cooling costs.
Other types of housings that you may need to consider when selecting pot light fixtures Toronto include:
- UL/ CUL Damp Locations
- Fire Rated Light Covers
- Commercial use housings
For professional assistance when shopping for pot light fixtures in Toronto, you can rely on us. We guarantee you the best solutions when it comes to potlights for residential or commercial uses.
Types of Pot-light Trims
Once you’ve installed your recessed lights, trims are the only parts that will remain visible. You should confirm that the trims you pick correspond with your new or existing housing. Here, at Mr. Potlight, we provide various types of trims, including:
- Baffles
- Wall washers
- Eyeballs
Other types that you may need to consider when purchasing pot light fixtures in Toronto include open, reflectors, and decorative trims.

What Are LED Pot Lights?
LED stands for light emitting diode. That doesn’t mean much to you, but it will in a second. LED lighting products work completely differently than conventional light bulbs. By passing an electrical current through a microchip, the energy source illuminates tiny light sources we call LEDs (or light emitting diodes) resulting in visible light. These kinds of lights are directional light sources, meaning they emit light in a specific direction unlike incandescent or CFL bulbs, which emit light every which way. This allows an LED to emit light much more efficiently than a conventional bulb, but is also far more difficult to produce. Usually, you’ll see coloured LEDs in signal lights, computer parts and inside older televisions. In order to produce the white light of a lightbulb, different coloured LED lights are combined and covered with a phosphor material which converts the light into a neutral, white light. See? It’s simple.
Why Choose LED Pot Lights?
LED pot lights are rapidly growing in popularity among pot light buyers because they offer the longest lasting light source for the lowest cost. LEDs virtually never burn out, cost pennies to use and are very powerful. But why do these lights work the way they do, and what gives them this incredible edge over halogen and incandescent light bulbs? It goes into the construction of each bulb.
Why LED Pot Lights are Better Than Incandescent?
To start off, Incandescent bulbs use a filament, the little curly wire we see in some bulbs. When the light is turned on, electric current is sent through that filament, which heats up and glows due to the traffic of electrons traveling through it. The issue with this is that it wears out the filament over a period of time and when the filament is completely worn out, the light is considered “burnt out”. Incandescent light generally doesn’t last too long, rated only for about 1000-2000 hours. Halogens are significantly better overall, with a lifespan of anywhere from 6000-15000 hours of lighting, but again, they eventually burn out. LED’s are a completely different lighting source altogether.
LEDs use a process known as electroluminescence, which is when a positive and negative current is shot through atoms to create light. This process uses little energy because very little heat is produced, however, in bunches LED’s are extremely powerful. The life expectancy of an LED bulb can be up to 100000 hours. To put that into perspective, if you turned on an LED pot light for 3 hours every day, that light will work for you for up to 91 years!
LED pot lights are also good for places that have insulation because they generate little to no heat, which makes them IC rated and it means they add to the already immense versatility of pot lights. They are also multi-directional like regular pot lights and still have the ability to fully light a room. The effect is even more so with LED lights because they are more powerful than conventional bulbs. If you’re looking for a low-maintenance, high efficiency pot light for your household, LED is the best option.
LED Pot Lights Advantages
Now that you know all that technical talk, we’ll get right into the benefits of LED lighting. You’ll find that when you compare, you won’t know why you ever purchased any other bulbs than LED, which is basically the largest leap in LED technology and is the biggest leap in lighting, akin to taking analog lighting and replacing it with digital.
- Longer Lifespan – The number one cause for using LED bulbs is their life expectancy. LED bulbs have an expected lifespan of up to 100,000 hours or 11 continuous years of use. So, even if you leave the lights on for 8 hours a day you’d have to wait about 20 years before replacing the bulb. Crazy, right? Can you imagine exchanging your lightbulb once in the time it’ll take you to go through 5 smartphones?
- LED lights never really burn out – LED’s are different than standard lighting, as they don’t actually burn out like a normal lightbulb. Instead, the diodes in the light emit lower levels of energy and slowly become less bright. You may see your light dimming, but it won’t go out for a long, long time.
- Energy efficient beyond belief – An LED bulb is today’s most efficient way of lighting, and has an estimated efficiency of 80-90% more than conventional bulbs, with a loss of between 10-20%. This is the complete opposite of conventional bulbs, which are about 20% efficiency and loses about 80% of the energy used. The longer lifespan of an LED bulb acts as a multiplier, achieving more energy efficiency over the lifespan of the bulb. Think of a large shopping centre lit only by LED lights. Yes, that mall is saving 30% more energy than it would be should it be lit with conventional incandescent bulbs.
- Environmentally friendly – No mercury included, no toxic materials used during production and 100% recyclable materials. A single LED light bulb can save the materials and replacements needed to make 25 incandescent bulbs. Why is anyone still using normal light bulbs? We can’t figure it out.
- You’ll never accidentally break one – Ever tried to screw in an incandescent bulb only to have it shatter in your hands? LED bulbs are resistant to shock, vibration and impact, meaning they’re excellent for outdoor lighting systems and are perfect for clumsy people. That’s not to say you’re clumsy, but let’s admit that you’ve cracked at least one light bulb in your lifetime.
- No UV emission or infrared light – Unlike conventional bulbs, they are suitable for the illumination of light and heat sensitive items and objects due to little heat emission, and virtually no UV emission.
- Flexible design and use – As LEDs can be combined to produce any colour, lighting and distribution, they are among the most flexible for interior design and mood adjustment.
- Low-voltage operation – You don’t need a high-voltage power supply to illuminate your home, meaning LED lighting can be used in outdoor settings, and can be connected to a solar-battery. This makes them perfect for outdoor settings, rural areas and remote locations.

The key variation in pot lights comes with the decorative trim that is installed with the light itself. While a baffled trim has a ribbed interior to remove any possible glare, the reflective trim provides the most illumination. The lights can also come with an adjustable head, allowing you to direct the light to a specific location, or a wall trim, which blocks a portion of the light to highlight a specific area, such as a painting.
As opposed to the more traditional incandescent and halogen light bulbs, LED lights can offer as much as six or seven times the energy efficiency. The difference in energy efficiency will remove a significant expense from your electricity bill, and provide you with a more environmentally friendly method of lighting your home. Our installation technicians are able to provide you with an LED pot light alternative to our more conventional pot light products.
It’s up to you to determine the light brightness, tint and colour which best accentuates your interior. We recommend choosing a bulb type and brightness before contacting us, so that we can advise you on how best to proceed. If you’re installing tinted lights, remember that they are exchangeable, though not inexpensive. Ensure you are ready to commit to a bulb.
