Potlights Bring Your Home to Life

Why are my LED Pot Lights Flickering

LED lights are becoming more and more popular each passing day. This is thanks to their impressive energy efficiency and ability to last much longer than traditional bulbs. In addition, they are more durable, work in freezing temperatures, and don’t contain mercury. If you notice LED pot light flickering, read this article to learn the causes and see what you can do for solutions.

Thermal Protection Switch

Regulations require all recessed lighting fixtures to come equipped with thermal protection switches. This could be the source of your flickering lights. Between the fixture’s load and line sits a thermocouple – a tube-shaped component.

The thermal protection switch will shut down the power to the recessed light should the temperature get too hot, but will turn back on when things cool down. This protects you from potential wire damage, while also bringing to light any heat issues that exist internally.

Light Bulb Wattage

If you’ve recently hooked up some new LED lighting, you might notice some flickering. This could be due to the circuit.

The bulbs draw power and if the circuit voltage isn’t high enough, the result will be flickering. A simple solution to this would be to move the LED light to a circuit that can handle the voltage.

Ceiling Insulation

Ceiling insulation can play a role when it comes to flickering lights – pay close attention to the areas around the light canister. If there is insulation surrounding the canister you should think about implementing insulation dams.

You can use drywall scrap or sheet metal to construct a box around the canister. This will create better airflow and reduce the chances of overheating.

Loose Wiring

Loose wiring can be another explanation as to why your LED pot lights are flickering. If this is the case you expose yourself to the possibility of arcing, electrical shorts, and even fires. To identify loose wiring you will want to turn off the circuit breaker.

In regards to recessed lighting, the rule of thumb is white wires to white wires and black to black. You’ll need pliers and some electrical know-how. This is probably the best time to put safety at the forefront and consult an electrician.

Dimmer Switches

Perhaps the most common reason for flickering pot lights is because of those pesky dimmer switches. More often than not, there isn’t enough resistance within the lamp and this can cause the dimmer to function inefficiently. A lot of the dimmers on the market today are created to withstand large electrical loads, and this doesn’t always translate well to operating a low-voltage LED.

If you are working with an older model dimmer switch, it may only be capable of running with incandescent bulbs. You will have to purchase yourself some dimmers that can work with LEDs. Manufacturers typically provide compatibility information about switches and bulbs, so keep an eye out for this when shopping.
